AUDIENCES' Summer Insight Series

Before You Buy Another Marketing Technology Platform, Ask These 10 Questions

By Hugh Stevens, Managing Director EMEA, AUDIENCES

One of the things we've always believed at AUDIENCES is that customers should never have to buy technology on trust alone. Whether you choose AUDIENCES or another platform, you have to understand exactly how your customer data will be managed, how quickly you'll see value and whether the technology genuinely fits your long-term strategy.

The martech industry has never offered more choices. That's a good thing. But it has also never been more complex. Buzzwords are everywhere. Every platform promises AI. Every vendor claims to be cloud-native. Every sales presentation talks about interoperability, activation and transformation.

Having spent more than two decades working across agency, technology and data businesses including leadership roles at Dentsu and LiveRamp, I've learned that the best buying decisions rarely come from the slickest demonstrations.

They come from asking better questions. That's why we've put together this checklist.

Not because we think there's only one right answer, but because we believe every organisation should feel confident asking these questions of every technology partner, including us.

The Enterprise Martech Checklist

1. Where does our customer data actually live?

If the answer involves moving, copying or exporting customer data multiple times, stop and ask why. Modern cloud platforms allow brands to activate customer intelligence without unnecessary duplication.

Ask your vendor: How does our customer data stay under our control throughout activation?

2. How long until we see value?

Enterprise projects have a habit of becoming enterprise programmes. If implementation takes six months before marketers can use it, you've already lost valuable time. Quick wins build confidence and internal support.

Ask your vendor: How quickly can our marketing team activate its first audience?

3. Will marketing become more dependent on IT?

Marketing and IT should work together not create more bottlenecks for each other. The right platform reduces operational complexity rather than introducing more.

Ask your vendor: Which tasks can marketers manage themselves, and where is IT support actually required?

4. How many new copies of our data will exist?

Every duplicate creates governance challenges, compliance considerations and unnecessary cost. Less movement usually means less complexity.

Ask your vendor: How many copies of our customer data are created during implementation and activation?

5. Does this fit into our existing cloud & data strategy?

Technology shouldn't force you to rethink your architecture, it should complement the investments you've already made. Whether you're using Snowflake, Databricks, Google Cloud or another environment, your technology should work with, not against, your cloud strategy.

Ask your vendor: Does your platform integrate with our existing cloud ecosystem?

6. Can we work with any partner we choose?

The marketing ecosystem changes constantly. Media partners evolve. Retail media grows. New activation channels emerge. Your technology should never limit your future choices.

Ask your vendor: Can we connect with the partners and platforms we choose, or are we tied into a closed ecosystem?

7. Are we buying features or solving business problems?

A long feature list rarely appears in a board presentation. Business outcomes do. Lower acquisition costs; Higher customer lifetime value; Better campaign performance; Faster activation. Those are the metrics that matter.

Ask your vendor: Which measurable business outcomes have your customers achieved?

8. How future-proof is this platform?

AI, clean rooms, retail media and privacy regulation will continue to evolve. The technology you choose today needs to support the opportunities you'll face tomorrow.

Ask your vendor: How is your platform preparing customers for the next five years, not just the next five months?

9. Who is the data controller?

This is one of the most important questions. Technology providers should never be controllers of your data.  Your customer data should remain your strategic advantage and no one else should handle it but you. Understanding if a provider wants to be a joint controller and/or processor of your data is critical.

Ask your vendor: Who owns our customer data, our customer relationships and our ability to activate them?

10. What happens after implementation?

Buying technology is easy. Driving adoption is much harder. The best partners don't disappear once contracts are signed, they help customers build capability, deliver value quickly and continue to evolve.

Ask your vendor: What does customer success actually look like after implementation?

How AUDIENCES Measures Itself

We've encouraged you to ask these questions of every technology partner including us. So, in the spirit of transparency, here's how we answer them.

Our Answers

Where does our customer data live? Your customer data stays in your cloud environment. AUDIENCES activates it without unnecessary movement or duplication.

How quickly can we see value? Most customers begin activating audiences in weeks, not months, with measurable outcomes delivered early in the implementation.

Will marketing become more dependent on IT? IT provides governance and security, while marketers have the autonomy  to build and activate audiences independently of IT and data science.

How many copies of our data are created? None as part of our activation model. We believe customer data should remain where it already resides.

Does it fit our cloud strategy? Yes. AUDIENCES is built to work natively with modern cloud environments including Snowflake, Databricks, Google Cloud, AWS and Azure.

Can we choose our own partners? Absolutely. We believe in interoperability, giving customers the freedom to connect to the platforms, publishers and partners that best suit their business.

What business outcomes should we expect? Our customers use AUDIENCES to improve campaign performance, reduce acquisition costs, increase ROAS, enable retail media and unlock greater value from first-party customer intelligence.

Is the platform future-ready? Yes. Our cloud-native architecture is designed to evolve alongside AI, privacy regulation, retail media and changing activation channels.

Who is the data controller? You are. Always. Your customer data and strategic decisions remain under your control. AUDIENCES is not and will never own or process your data. It stays in your cloud. AUDIENCES has no access.

What happens after implementation? Our Customer Success team works alongside every customer to drive adoption, identify new use cases and deliver ongoing value, not just complete implementation.

Final Thoughts

No platform is right for every organisation. But we do believe every organisation deserves clear, honest answers to these questions before making an investment. At AUDIENCES, transparency builds better partnerships. If a technology provider can't clearly answer these questions, it's worth asking why. And if they can, you'll have far greater confidence that you're making the right long-term decision for your business.

We encourage every organisation evaluating customer intelligence, audience activation or martech platforms to use this checklist, not just with us, but with every vendor they meet Because better questions lead to better technology decisions and better technology decisions create better business outcomes. If you'd like to challenge our answers or ask us questions we haven't covered, we'd genuinely welcome the conversation.

After all, the best partnerships begin with transparency.
