And why is it becoming one of the most important concepts in enterprise technology?

One of the privileges of working as a CTO is having a front-row seat to how enterprise technology evolves. Every day, I speak with customers, cloud providers, technology partners and our own engineering and product teams about the challenges organisations face as they modernise their data and marketing infrastructure.
Those conversations often reveal the next shift in our industry long before it becomes mainstream. Over the past year, one term has increasingly dominated those discussions: interoperability.
It's appearing in analyst reports and conference keynotes. It's being used by cloud providers, software vendors and systems integrators alike. Whether you're exploring AI, customer intelligence, retail media or cloud architecture, interoperability has quickly become one of the defining themes of modern enterprise technology. Yet despite its growing prominence, it's also one of the least well explained.
Like many technology terms, interoperability risks becoming another piece of industry shorthand, widely used but rarely defined. That's a missed opportunity, because understanding what interoperability actually means is becoming increasingly important for organisations making decisions about technology investment. This isn't simply another technical concept. It represents a fundamental shift in how software is designed, how data is managed and how organisations unlock value from the technology they already own.
Before we explore why interoperability has become such an important industry discussion, it's worth stepping back and asking a simpler question: what does the term actually mean, and why has it become so central to the future of enterprise technology?
What is interoperability?
At its simplest, interoperability is the ability for different technologies, platforms and systems to work together seamlessly. Not simply to connect, not simply to exchange data but to operate together in a way that allows organisations to move information, activate intelligence and deliver outcomes without unnecessary complexity.
As organisations invest in cloud platforms, AI, customer intelligence, retail media and analytics, technology no longer operates in isolation. The value no longer comes from selecting the best individual platform; it comes from how effectively those platforms work together.
Isn't that just integration?
This is where much of the confusion begins. Integration and interoperability are closely related, but they are not the same thing. An integration connects two systems. It enables information to move between them, often through a dedicated connector or API. Think of it as building a bridge between two islands. The bridge serves its purpose, but the islands remain separate. Interoperability takes a broader view.
Rather than relying on dozens of individual connections, interoperable systems are designed around common standards, shared architectures and open communication. The goal isn't simply to connect one application to another, it's to create an ecosystem where technologies can work together naturally and evolve without creating additional complexity. In other words, integration solves individual problems. Interoperability creates an environment where fewer problems exist in the first place.
Why has interoperability become such an important topic?
The answer lies in the changing nature of enterprise technology. Most organisations now operate hundreds of applications across marketing, commerce, analytics, customer service, finance and cloud infrastructure. At the same time, AI is accelerating the demand for connected, high-quality data that can move securely across those environments.
As a result, technology leaders are asking different questions than they were five years ago. It is no longer enough to ask whether a platform has the features you need. The more important question is whether it works effectively alongside the technology you've already invested in. That shift is changing how organisations evaluate software and design their technology strategies.
Why marketers should care
Interoperability may sound like an infrastructure discussion, but its impact is increasingly felt in marketing. When technology works together effectively, customer intelligence flows more easily between systems. Audiences can be activated more quickly. New media partners and activation channels can be introduced without lengthy implementation projects, while existing technology investments continue to deliver value rather than being replaced.
For marketing teams under pressure to move faster and demonstrate greater return on investment, interoperability removes friction from the process. Less friction means greater agility. And greater agility creates more opportunities for innovation.
Why it matters for AI
Much of today's conversation around AI focuses on agents and automation. In reality, AI is only as effective as the architecture that supports it. AI depends on trusted and accessible data. If customer intelligence is fragmented across multiple platforms, duplicated unnecessarily or difficult to access, AI inherits those same limitations.
Interoperability creates the conditions that allow AI to operate across an organisation rather than inside isolated applications. It's rarely the headline, but it is increasingly becoming the foundation.
How the cloud changed everything
Cloud platforms have accelerated the move towards interoperable architectures. Historically, enterprise applications often created their own copies of customer data. Every new platform introduced another dataset to govern and secure. Today, organisations are increasingly working from shared cloud environments where data can remain under the organisation's control. That changes the role of software. The best technology no longer needs to own your data, it simply needs to work with it. That's a significant shift not just in architecture, but in mindset.
What does good interoperability look like?
For me, organisations should look for five principles.
1. Freedom of choice - Technology should enable organisations to choose the partners, platforms and cloud environments that best meet their needs, not force them into a single ecosystem.
2. Open standards - Software should communicate through recognised standards that make collaboration simpler today and adaptation easier tomorrow.
3. Minimal data movement - Customer data should remain where it already resides wherever possible, reducing unnecessary duplication while strengthening governance and security.
4. Faster innovation - Adding new capabilities, partners or activation channels should accelerate innovation rather than trigger lengthy redevelopment programmes.
5. Long-term flexibility - Technology should give organisations the confidence to evolve alongside changing customer expectations, new AI capabilities and future regulation without requiring wholesale replacement.
What does this mean for AUDIENCES?
At AUDIENCES, interoperability isn't simply a technical capability, it's one of the principles we built the platform around. We believe organisations shouldn't have to replace existing technology investments to unlock greater value from them. Marketing teams already have sophisticated cloud environments. Data teams already have trusted infrastructure. Technology teams already have governance frameworks.
Our role is not to introduce another disconnected platform. It's to help those existing investments work together more effectively, allowing customer intelligence to move where it's needed while remaining under the organisation's control. That's what interoperability means to us.
Final thoughts
Interoperability may be one of the industry's newest buzzwords, but the principle behind it is neither fashionable nor temporary. As organisations continue to invest in AI and customer intelligence, the ability for technology to work together seamlessly will become less of a competitive advantage and more of an expectation. The businesses that succeed over the next decade won't necessarily be those with the largest technology stacks, they'll be the organisations that build connected, flexible architectures capable of adapting to whatever comes next.
